Don't be Timid


As the birthday girl I was treated to a Michelin starred lunch at Gary Rhodes restaurant Rhodes 24. The restaurant is situated on the 24th floor of Tower 42 which is one of London’s tallest buildings.

We were seated by the window which provided for a fantastic view across the city and of the now infamous Gherkin.

The Rhodes 24 menu is very British accented with the odd quirky element, as a starter I chose seared scallops with creamy mashed potato and a shallot mustard sauce. The scallops melted in the mouth and were cooked to perfection. The mash was a swirly mountain of creamy goodness dressed with a delicate sauce. A simple but beautiful dish.

Now for the slightly unusual, quirky part of the meal. For the main course I chose the fillet of beef with spinach and truffle macaroni with a Madeira sauce. I must admit I have never had macaroni with a good sized piece of beef before! The truffle swung the decision for me as my biggest food weakness is truffle. I can’t get enough of it.

The perfectly cooked medium rare fillet of beef sat nestled on some beautifully wilted spinach with a drizzle of Madeira gravy, presented with a small copper pan of truffle macaroni was serenely placed in front of me.

The macaroni was creamy and I could certainly taste the truffle. I am not entirely sure if it worked as a side dish. It would have been great as a main course on its own. Both the beef and the pasta were cooked to perfection but as to whether it was a marriage made in heaven………I think the jury is still out on that one.

Now for the dessert. Oh my! What seemed like a fairly light though maybe slightly dull dessert turned out to be the tastiest dessert I have had in a while! I chose the ‘Strawberry’. It consisted of a toasted marshmallow meringue with English strawberry compote, strawberry sorbet and warm vanilla custard. The fluffy pillow of marshmallow meringue in the middle of my plate was adorned with slivers of beautifully sweet strawberry. There was a side dish of the strawberry compote and a small jug of the warm silk smooth vanilla custard.

The combination of the marshmallow, fresh strawberries, strawberry compote and custard was divine! I felt like I had died and gone to heaven!

I felt like I’d been to a restaurant that cared about it’s food and how its clients received it to how it was enjoyed. A thoroughly recommended experience for anyone looking to enjoy something special for any time of day.
