After launching its own makeup line earlier this year, PANTONE has teamed up with Sephora to create a color-matching tool for skin. Called the ‘Sephora + PANTONE Color IQ’, the hand-held color-matching tool—developed by X-rite—helps its users identify the precise color of their skin to help them scientifically-find the perfect shade of foundation they should use, amongst different brands and formulas.

Is this a useful tool, or is it just another gadget being released to market to take the artistry out of a creative job. It seems to us that this is just another tool to allow the masses to pretend to be “Artists” and the skill and eye that is required by a truly talented artist is nothing more than a simple gadget. It will be interesting to see how this performs on those of us with less than perfect skin, and by less than perfect I mean with various tones all over our faces. Pantone probably had the very best of intentions when creating this, lets see how many abuse it.

The device, The Color IQ, is being used in Times Square Sephora, and Power St Sephora in San Francisco,

Lets wait with baited breath and see what happens.
